As we reported earlier, Etihad will resume its A380 flights on July 24th between AUH and SYD. However, EY’s A380 won’t return to US skies until January 1st, 2021, when the carrier resumes its AUH to JFK route.
My first A380 flight was in first class on this route, and it was spectacular. Dubbed “The Apartment”, the first class suite features a large reclining chair and a separate fold out bed. In my opinion, it ranks as the second-best A380 experience in the world, behind only Singapore Airlines new first class suites.
Round trip flights from AUH to JFK are frequently over $10k, but I’ve round a routing that can put you in Etihad’s first class Apartment for just $4,333. The only catch is you’ll need to reposition to Jakarta (CGK) first. The CKG to AUH leg will be in business class on EY’s 787, and the return will actually take you from AUH to SIN on EY’s 777 in first, and then from SIN to CDK on Garuda’s 737 in business. These fares are available starting January 1st, 2021. There is no maximum stay in JFK, so you can turn this into two round the world flights.
Another option is to book this as a multi-city ticket, which will give you a few days to spend in AUH. Interestingly, with this option you travel from CKG to SIN on Garuda’s 737 in business class, then fly from SIN to AUH on Ethiad’s 777 first class, then back on the same route. The total for this trip comes to IDR 62,769,300, or $4,390. That’s not bad for about 40 hours on EY’s first class – albeit only 28 hours in The Apartment – roundtrip.
Repositioning to CGK is not as hard as it sounds. Award trips from JFK to CGK are available on JAL through Alaska Airlines for 65k in business or 40k in economy each way.
You can book through Google flights here, and availability is wide open after January 1st.
